Proper maintenance of your woodworking equipment should be a routine that you’re well familiar of, right?

However, if you’re new to it, you’re probably wondering how to perform some maintenance tasks. To ensure that your circular saw has a long lifespan, you’ll need to clean and lubricate the parts on a regular basis.

But what happens when you leave it unattained for alonger period?

The first thing that will happen is corrosion. Depending on the humidity in air or weather conditions in your area, your power tool can have a shorter or longer lifespan.

So what’s the scenario when it catches rust and how to remove it? Let’s find out right away.

Required Equipment

The first part is to get adequate equipment for cleaning rust from your corroded saw.

For this, you’ll need a pair of protective gloves, a couple of clamps, clothor a sander, and a rust removal solution. You can get them in any hardware shop. Depending on the damage that the corrosion has done to your router saw, you can either use chemicals to remove the rust or another power tool with anadequate extension like a grinder.

Disassembling

Now that you have the adequate rust removal equipment, it’s time to disassemble your table saw.

Start by unplugging it from a power source. Once it’s safe to start, open the table saw and remove the parts that corroded. In most cases, the rust will only generate on the saw itself. However, there are cases when you’ll need to disassemble the whole power tool into small pieces and remove the rust from each part.

Using Chemicals

One method of removing rust from any metal surface, including the saw on your power tool, consist of using rust removal chemicals. Depending on your budget, you can use a rust removal product like Evapo-Rust or Rust Release SuperGel or make the mixture yourself using household supplies. Both of these products will do wonders for removing rust from your power tool parts.

The method is simple. Apply the solution on the corroded surface and use sandpaper to rub the rust off. Once you’re done be sure to clean the surface, apply a protective coat and rub it in by using a microfiber cloth.

Using Rust Other Tools to Remove Rust

If you’re allergic to rust removal chemicals or have other reasons for not using one for cleaning corroded metal surfaces, you can use a power tool like a sander.

Start by protecting yourself with a mask, protective glasses, and earplugs. You don’t want to inhale the cloud of dust while removing the rust from your saw blade. Plug in the power tool with sander extension, and let the abrasive remove the rust as you go across it.

Once you’re done, clean the surface and apply a protective coat that will ensure that your saw blade doesn’t corrode in the future.

Finalizing

Now that the power tool parts are rust-free it’s time to assemble them.

While you’re assembling the parts, make sure to lubricate them and increase the effectiveness of your power tool. After you’re done, plug the power tool in a power source and check if it’s working. Only once you’ve checked that your power tool is functioning properly should you use it for your next project.

If, by any chance, your power tool isn’t working after removing the rust, grab a manual and check if you’ve assembled it correctly.
