SKILSAW SPT77WML – The Basics
This model is great for both professionals and hobbyists. The professionals love its accuracy, smoothness, and stability whereas the DIY-ers like its ease of use and simplistic design. On top of that, the price is more than acceptable making it one of the best budget-friendly units within this category.
One of the things that make this particular model worth investing in is its sheer power. The 15-amp motor is able to deliver quite a bit of RPM meaning it won’t have a single issue with dense pieces of lumber. The motor features a new technology called dual copper windings which decreases the overall temperature of the motor. It also helps when it comes to tackling massive projects and having to run continuously for hours.
The Features
The design
When it comes to the design, it’s pretty standard. There aren’t any impressive components that are particularly worth mentioning. However, the materials used in production are great. The primary component is magnesium which is well-known for its sturdiness and light weight. In simpler words, the machine is quite reliable and resistant. Therefore, you don’t have to worry about consistency; it won’t let you down in the middle of a project.
The hand grip is partially cushioned and rubberized, but we would have liked to see a better hand grip. That doesn’t mean it’s a particularly bad component, it just could have been designed a bit better. Nevertheless, the rubber coating significantly decreases the amount of vibrations from the blade. We do recommend wearing work gloves, regardless.
The Cut-Ready system allows you to fine-tune the machine on the go without any downtime. It also helps with quick adjustments and accurate depth measurements. The anti-snag guard plays a major role when it comes to the smoothness of operation.
Safety
Safety is at a decent level. The blade guards are well-designed and sturdy enough to withstand slight kickbacks. A lot of people tend to eliminate the blade guard because it allows them to work quicker. However, we strongly advise against interfering with any safety mechanisms because it can lead to fatal consequences. Remember, it’s always better to be safe than sorry.
Pros:
Simple to use
Dual copper windings
Accurate
Cons:
Somewhat intense vibrations
Things we liked about it
The thing we liked the most is the price-to-quality ratio. In other words, you’ll get a great power tool for a more than acceptable price. On top of that, the unit does its job well and without any hiccups. It can cope with massive projects without breaking a sweat.
The dual copper windings inside the motor offer a great deal of benefits. Even though it’s not as obvious, the decrease in working temperature has a massive effect on the overall performance. The cooler it gets, the better it cuts. Furthermore, the accuracy of this saw is at an envious level. One wouldn’t expect such great precision for this kind of price. Overall, if you’re looking for a neat power tool that’s affordable and efficient, take a moment and check the SPT77WML out.
Things we didn’t like
One of the things we didn’t like is the lack of buffers on the casing. In other words, the whole base is made of hard plastic with very little rubber on the hand grip. It means that vibrations might pose a problem to people who aren’t used to them. Wearing work gloves does decrease the vibrations by a bit, but it’s far from enough.
Some people got their units without any oil inside. Make sure you check the gear housing once your unit arrives and see if there’s any oil in there. Naturally, if the box is empty, fill it with proper oil type. Running the machine “dry” may cause severe issues.
General user impressions
People who own this model seem pretty satisfied. There are a few shortcomings, but no tool is perfect in the first place. The key is in overcoming those disadvantages with a lot of benefits. Skillsaw managed to design a good piece of equipment that has far more advantages than shortcomings.
Conclusion
As you can tell, the SPT77WML model is a worthy investment both for devoted professionals and DIY enthusiasts. It has an amazing price-to-quality ratio which makes it one of the best ones in this category, especially if you’re on a strict budget. If you’re looking for precision, this machine is the way to go. Versatility is not its strongest point, but it can cope with various projects without any issues.
If you’re not familiar with these tools, make sure you read the instructions first. Even though many people say it’s quite easy to use this particular model, reading the user manual is always advised. In case you aren’t sure about something, refer to the manual. You’ll find a well-written set of tips, rules, and basic principles of worm drive saws which may help a lot. If you think this model lacks some of the features you’re looking for, go ahead and check our other reviews out.
