Black+Decker LPP120 – The Basics

As you may know, Black+Decker is a well-respected brand in this industry. Even though they have had some ups and downs, especially in a past couple of years, they are still highly ranked among consumers thanks to their attention to details and build quality. This particular model features a decent motor that offers up to 100 cuts (1-1/2-inch pine) on a single charge. Now, that may seem like a lot but bear in mind that those are 1-inch branches instead of being 4x4 pine wood (which is more or less a standard unit for measuring cuts per charge).

One of the biggest advantages of this model is the lack of weight, especially in comparison to some other ones with similar features. If you’re worried about fatigue and exhaustion, you can rest assured that this particular model won’t leave much of an impact on your muscles. By the time you feel tired, the battery will be empty.

The Features

The design

As far as the design goes, it’s okay. The important thing about it is the fact that not all weight is focused on one end of the pole. Therefore, one can say that the weight is somewhat equally distributed throughout the unit. The battery is great because it’s a part of their one-for-all program. In simpler words, this particular battery is compatible with dozens of other tools manufactured by this company. In case you own a blower made by Black+Decker, and it’s a part of this program, the battery from this chainsaw can be used with it and vice-versa. It’s a great feature for people who want to cut downtime as much as possible. Instead of waiting for the recharge cycle to finish, you can use a spare battery and cut downtime.

The pole is decent. It’s sturdy, reliable, and most importantly – lightweight. It can be easily extended up to 10 feet giving you about 15 feet of reach depending on your height. The battery is located at the bottom of the pole, meaning it doesn’t put any pressure or weight on the top and significantly decreases the impact on your muscles.

Safety

One can say this machine is pretty safe. Many people think because a machine is powered by a battery that it isn’t capable of causing any damage. Needless to say, that’s a completely wrong assumption, and you would be surprised by the number of injuries caused due to negligence and ignorance. In order to be as safe as possible, make sure you read the user manual and follow the instructions, even if you have prior experience with pole chainsaws.

Things we liked about it

The light weight and ease of use are the two main selling points of this particular model. If you’re an absolute beginner or an occasional user, then this unit might be the thing for you. It has everything you’ll ever need for cutting thinner branches and trimming in the yard.

On top of that, the price-to-quality ratio is good. As we said, this model is made by a well-respected brand, and it shouldn’t cause any major issues. Also, it doesn’t require too much maintenance, which is great for people who weren’t planning on using it often.

Q

Things we didn’t like

The 20V battery is okay, but it’s far from the best on the market. It can be a favorable choice sometimes, but if you’re looking for any kind of intense power, this battery won’t be able to deliver. Therefore, any heavy-duty tasks are out of the question for this chainsaw.

The chain tensioning process can be a nuisance for some people, especially the inexperienced ones. It’s not as simple and easy as in some other models, but it shouldn’t be too hard for you to get the hang of it.

General user impressions

Black+Decker has been going through some issues in the past couple of months, and that did backfire on them as far as user trust goes. That doesn’t mean they aren’t worthy of your trust, but you should pay more attention to details than usual. However, this particular model seems to be well-accepted by the community. The most common thing people usually complain about is the battery.

Conclusion

You won’t get a professional performance out of this chainsaw. However, it’s still a valuable tool for people who aren’t planning on intensively utilizing the LPP120. In other words, it’s a great piece of equipment for cleanups after a storm or cutting high branches. On the other hand, it won’t do much more than cutting and trimming thin branches.

The price is great. In fact, it’s probably the biggest thing you should consider when deciding whether or not to purchase this model. It comes at an affordable price, and it pays itself out quite quickly as long as you use it within its limits. If it does meet your requirements, don’t hesitate to check it out. However, if it doesn’t – make sure you check out our other reviews.
