The only worse scenario for you is to end up with an overpaid unit that doesn’t meet your requirements. Oregon CS300 – The Basics

This 16-inch chainsaw offers a decent set of features for hobbyists and homeowners. Being a cordless model, it doesn’t offer much for professionals and more devoted people. In other words, if you were planning on tackling a massive project, this chainsaw isn’t something that’s going to cope with it too well. On the other hand, when it comes to cleanups after a storm or trimming and pruning, this particular model might be a good solution.

When it comes to the power output, it’s more or less expected. Its 4Ah battery is okay, but it needs up to four hours to recharge. It isn’t a long time per se, but it’s much more than some other models need for recharging. An hour or two is a tolerable recharge cycle, but four hours might be a deal breaker for some people. The safety features are okay, and the design is pretty neat.

The Features

The design

The design is quite good and most importantly – it’s user-friendly. In simpler words, this machine is one of the easiest to use, as far as we are concerned. All you have to do in order to start it is push a single button. There are no issues with pull cords, ignition, and so on. The hand grip has a layer of rubber acting as a cushion, but it’s definitely not the best one on the market. In fact, it doesn’t decrease the amount of vibrations as much as one would expect. It almost seems like it’s purely aesthetic instead of being highly functional. However, you don’t have to worry much about the vibrations and fatigue because they aren’t as intense.

The tool-less chain tensioning system is a great addition to an already versatile machine. It allows you to adjust the machine on the go without having to use any additional tools. It comes in handy because all you have to do is adjust the knob which takes only a couple of seconds.

The PowerSharp system is the thing that makes this unit desirable amongst enthusiasts. It works on a pretty simple principle, and yet it’s highly efficient. This system allows you to sharpen the chain by pulling down a single lever and letting it interact with the teeth. The whole process lasts for about three seconds, and it results in a newly sharpened chain. The battery lasts for about 400 cuts (2-3-inch branches) and can hold a charge for months. As we said, the recharge cycle takes 4 hours to complete.

Safety

The safety features are okay, but there aren’t any impressive ones that are worth mentioning. The regular low kickback and brake alarm are built in. One of the things they could have done better safety-wise is the shape and size of the trigger.

Working on Oregon CS300-A6

Pros:

N

Easy to use

N

Tool-less system

N

Self-sharpening system

Cons:

N

The battery takes too long to recharge

R

Things we liked about it

The chain tensioning system is a pleasant experience. While it may not seem too impressive to some people, you can rest assured that it saves quite a lot of time, effort, and nerves. On top of that, the adjustments take only a couple of seconds meaning you won’t even have any significant downtime.

The other good thing about this product is its price. Even though one cannot say, it’s a particularly cheap piece of equipment, because it isn’t, but it’s certainly a worthy investment for people who are planning on using its full potential. It does pay itself off as long as you know how to use it properly.

Q

Things we didn’t like

One of the biggest drawbacks for us is the recharge time of the battery. While it does offer around 400 cuts on a single charge, the 4 hours needed for a recharge seem too long. To put that into perspective, you can only use two charges per day because you won’t have enough daytime for the third one. However, this particular problem is easily solvable with a spare battery.

General user impressions

Hobbyists and DIYers like the simplicity and convenient design. Also, the tool-less tensioning system is praised by many. On the other hand, the professionals aren’t too happy with this machine, but it’s an expected outcome because it’s a battery-powered one. In the end, it all comes down to your requirements. As far as the quality of production goes, it fulfills our criteria.

Oregon CS300-A6

Conclusion

The question many people ask is – “Is it worth investing in this model?”

The short answer is – Yes. However, the longer answer might give you a better insight into what to expect and what to hope for. As we said, if you don’t like downtime and long recharge cycles, this model isn’t the one for you. The battery needs four hours to recharge, and it’s just too much for some people.

On the other hand, if you don’t have a problem with long recharge cycles, this unit is a pretty good choice. It offers a decent amount of power, reliability, and longevity. It also doesn’t require much maintenance and special care.
