Review Summary:

Chainsaws are one of the most widely used power tools in the world. As we all know, there are a few different types of saws, but gas-powered ones are somewhat dominant due to their superior power and great portability. However, purchasing one for yourself is not as easy as it sounds. In fact, it’s quite a serious task, especially if you’re planning on utilizing your new tool on a daily basis.

In order to find the best-suiting one for your needs, you must pay attention to a couple of things. First of all, take a look at the technical specifications and see if you’re okay with the maximum power output, safety features, noise levels, and vibration levels. On top of that, keep your budget in mind because one can easily get carried by the imposing list of details which, more often than not, don’t mean much to an average consumer. We wrote a detailed review of the RM5118R model so that you don’t have to hassle with finding a reliable source of information.

Specifications:

  • Cylinder displacement – 51cc
  • Power output – Not available
  • Oil pump – Automatic/Manual
  • Recommended bar length – 18″

Remington RM5118R – The Basics

Even though it’s not the best unit on the market, it definitely has a thing or two to offer. The first thing people notice about it is the high power output. The manufacturer didn’t share the exact numbers, but this motor is close to having 3 to 3.5HP. The RPM values are also unknown.

Whether you’re looking to trim trees, prune bushes, or cut small branches, this particular model will do the job. It might not cope well with thick and dense logs, but lighter projects are a piece of cake for this chainsaw. Therefore, if you’re a devoted hobbyist, you might want to look deeper into the features and specifications because you’ll certainly find them interesting. The price is okay, although we would have liked to see it go a bit lower. However, it’s a premium model, so a slight increase in price doesn’t come as a massive surprise.

The Features

The design

The first thing you will notice about the design is its compactness. While it does look like many other gas-powered units, the main difference is in the quality and sturdiness of materials used in the production. You can rest assured that every component of this machine has been tested and graded meaning there are far fewer possibilities of something going wrong.

The 2-cycle engine is good enough for extended use, but it won’t deal particularly well with massive trees. The anti-vibration handles are designed with care, and one can tell that the manufacturer invested a lot of attention to details when it comes to safety regulations and operator’s convenience. Intense vibrations tend to cause fatigue meaning you won’t have to struggle with exhaustion thanks to the innovative anti-vibration technology. The system is constantly lubricated by the automatic oil pump, but you can opt for manual regulation if it makes a difference for you.

Safety

As far as the safety goes, the low-kickback is the primary thing you should be looking into. Luckily, this and most other modern models feature a well-made anti-kickback system. However, make sure you read the user manual first in order to get familiar with safety regulations for the RM5118R. While many people think these machines usually come with identical manuals – it’s not always the case, and they may differ in some cases. As you can assume, even the slightest oversight might cause severe injuries and sometimes even death.

What we liked about it

Compactness is definitely the biggest advantage of this machine. In simpler words, it’s a powerful system packed into a convenient chassis that’s suitable both for professionals and DIYers. Speaking of professionals, some of them said that this unit could cope with some more demanding tasks, while others don’t recommend it.

We, on the other hand, recommend something else for a more demanding project. However, it all comes down to your personal preferences. The 18-inch bar limitation can affect the overall productivity. You can mount a bigger bar, but that change will result in more noise, vibrations, and fuel consumption.

Q

What we didn’t like

Some people reported poor quality control and faulty units. We cannot take a stand on that as we didn’t experience it ourselves, but it’s something you should keep in mind nevertheless. It’s not a big deal, after all; the manufacturer offers both refunds and replacements in case of faulty units or missing parts. The fact that it’s not a famous brand makes people question the quality of their machines. You can rest assured that they do feature high-quality parts even though you might have never heard of this particular brand.

Overheating is also a reported issue and should be considered during purchase.

General user impressions

The opinions are mixed. Some people loved its simplicity, while others hated the plastic parts and the overall looks of this unit. As we said, it’s not the best product on the market by any means, but it’s certainly a good solution for people who are either on a budget or don’t need a machine for daily use. If you’re an occasional user, there shouldn’t be any issues with the RM5118R.

Conclusion

Getting the right model can sometimes be a pretty tough decision, especially if you’re in a hurry. This short review should offer some insight into the capabilities of this chainsaw and make your decision a bit easier. If you’re aiming to cut branches, trim, prune, or clear debris after a storm – feel free to go with this model. It has more than enough features to back up our claims and fulfill your requirements.

On the other hand, if you’re a devoted professional in need of a premium-graded power tool, you might want to avoid this particular one. It’s not a bad piece of equipment per se, but it doesn’t cope well with large projects and continuous load.
